NEST SYMBOLISM
A NEST IS SYMBOLIC OF THE FOLLOWING
  • Getting ready for a new domestic life
  • comfort
  • safety
  • protection
  • new opportunities
  • homeliness
Yes, everybody knows the importance of light, which makes it the reason why when people place so much value on light alone, yet shadows might not seem as important but they also come into consideration too. Only then do luminaire concepts and ideas start to make sense.
So my main point is, it should be much more about just lighting a particular space, but also considering the function and impact and how shadows evoke feelings and emotions, because on the other hand light is just light like air it is just there ,yet shadows have that certain impact depending on how they cast.

  • The initial idea was to use bottles and cover them with reeds giving a strong emphasis of the concept, which would have became a perfect end product if I had all the material and resources.
  • The second idea was to use wire to make the pattern and perspects as a translucent cover, of which I tried and it was too complicated to construct.
  • The final ideas shown on the design has a wire frame structure with shoe laces (flexibility reasons) around it creating that "Nest" pattern. The cover is a translucent sheet with bumf paper (semi-translucent).
SUITABLE FOR
  • Residential settings
  • Traditional Resturaunts
  • Hotels

THE HUB

PRECEDENT STUDY
KAYAMANDI TOURISM CENTER
BY DENNIS MOSS PARTNERSHIP ARCHITECTS

As to develop the next stage of my design I have chosen Kayamandi Tourism centre as my precedent study.
I have chosen this precedent mainly because of its technological idea and how it interprete the the concept of the tree . Sustainable material such as Gum Poles and Bamboo of which correspond to my concept of the ¨tree¨ because they are simple and are cost effective as well as sustainable have been used in the design.
The idea of making the bamboo take the role of the perlins , I feel it is a sustainable way of limiting the sun and and some how make people feel like they are really under a tree and brings about the senses of their roots. However even the landscaping of the area expresses an atmospere of humanity and peace.

THE TREE HOUSE BY VAN DER MERWE MISZEWSKI

green design, eco design, sustainable design, Capetown, South Africa, Van Der Merwe Miszewski Architects, glass curtain, Treehouse
As my second part of precedent study because my Huvb design consists of two parts I have chosen the Tre House.
Encoring the trees surounding the property, Van Der Merwe Miszewski created five tree like archietctural elemrnts free standing ,anchoring the roof and provides support throughout the open floor area.
Gievn the dominating presence, these tall, canopied trees served as design inspiration. The linear plan is organised on three levels around five tree like columns, growing through a triple volume and branching out to support the roof. it is difficult not to read the tree like columns and roof as an extension of the forest trees.
With regards to my design I have incorporated a couple of conceptual ideas from from the tree house.

TREE CONCEPT AND STRENGTHENING OF THE IDEA
The main idea /concept of my design is a tree. A simple word /element that is deep in symbolism. My design has to be a structure with an interesting mix of sustainable material that makes the space more appealing and exciting and for all people to feel that it belongs to them. A simple space is to bring about accessibility and a humbled space for everybody to feel welcome to use. Yet a fancy design/space can somehow intimidate certain people and leading them to not feeling comfortable to use the space because of assuming or subconsciously believing that it only belongs to certain sophisticated people.
A hub is to be designed as a result of the lack of entertainment options, eating areas/public areas to meet and eat in a certain community. However it has to be designed in a manner that will suite and accommodate all citizens (Junior and senior).
Unlike human beings a tree never takes more than it needs. A tree never consumes tonnes of water, but only consumes enough to survive and grow. Sustainable material such as gum poles, bamboo sticks and natural stone are to be used as to conserve and bring about a cost effective structure which is symbolic to the tree’s behaviour.
Shady areas are guaranteed to be added to escape heat and protect the people using the space from harmful substances from the sun, similar to reaction of a tree.
Branches of a tree can symbolise connection which brings about togetherness and communication between the people as well as joy, security and friend creation. The Wi-Fi can be related or referred to the branches of the tree because they spread out and reaches a certain span and covers a certain area and spreads to all directions.

THE HUB EXERCISE 5
BY
MONGEZI N MSOMI

MAIN IDEA
  • Tree concept (symbolic of humanity and brings about togetherness and give human oxygen)
  • A place to meet/ socialise
  • A place where one can get information and support ( WI-FI as one of the focuses)
  • A place where people with learning disabilities and support can meet up.
  • Relaxation , exciting and appealing space
  • Sustainability ( the use of economical and low cost material)

The green title block also emphasises the Tree Concept and 'Green' is sustainable.

I had to login with Google Chrome to be able to upload my work and I kind of struggled to convert Large paper sizes (A1) from PDF to Jpg.
Please leave a comment if you can.Expecially with what I can do to improve for my Presentation next week...

Thank you.
